At 49, Jason David Frank, star of ‘Power Rangers’, dies

Jason David Frank, the Green Power Ranger Tommy Oliver in the 1990s children’s series “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” died. He was 49.

Justine Hunt, Frank’s manager, released a statement Sunday confirming that Frank had died. She didn’t give any details about the cause or the date, but requested privacy for his friends and family as they grieve the loss of this wonderful human being.

Walter Emmanuel Jones, the original Black Power Ranger, wrote on Instagram that he couldn believe what he saw. Jones wrote, “My heart is broken to have lost another member our special family.” Thuy Trang, the Yellow Power Ranger’s original character, was killed in a car accident at 27 years old.

“Mighty MorphinPower Rangers,” a series about five teenage superheroes who work together to save the Earth from evil, premiered on Fox in 1993. It quickly became a pop culture phenomenon. Frank’s Tommy Oliver, a villain brainwashed and manipulated by Rita Repulsa, was first shown in the first season. He was soon inducted into the Green Ranger group and quickly became one of the most beloved characters on the show.

Although his role was not intended to last, Frank was eventually brought back as the White Ranger leader. Frank’s Tommy Oliver was also seen as the Red Zeo Ranger as well as the Red Turbo Ranger, Black Dino Ranger, and other rangers in spin-off TV shows. He was also seen in “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie”, “Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie,” as well as a cameo appearance in “Power Rangers,” the 2017 reboot.

Frank is a practitioner of martial arts and fought in mixed martial arts bouts in 2009 as well as 2010.

TMZ reported earlier that Frank’s second spouse, Tammie Frank filed for divorce in August. Frank is survived four children, one from his marriage to Tammie Frank and three from Shawna Frank’s first marriage.
